The technology curriculum at The Walker School offers a rich and diverse learning experience, equipping students with a robust foundation in digital literacy, computer science principles and robotics.

 

PRIMARY SCHOOL

In Primary School, the TEC (Technology, Engineering, and Creativity) classes introduce students to the fundamentals of technological concepts such as the engineering design process, predicting, sequencing, coding and robotics, Our youngest students learn through play and are given opportunities to explore basic tools and concepts, while practicing patience, teamwork and problem-solving skills, with a goal toward preparing them for Lower School.  

LOWER SCHOOL

The Lower School technology curriculum at The Walker School is designed to empower young learners with essential digital skills while fostering responsible and ethical use of technology. The program begins with a focus on digital citizenship, imparting fundamental principles of online safety, etiquette, and responsible technology use. As the curriculum progresses, students explore tools for school, coding, and robotics. They acquire experience with various educational technologies, developing a toolkit that enhances their academic journey.

Additionally, the curriculum introduces students to the exciting realms of robotics and programming. They are introduced to the principles of coding and robotics through interactive projects. These projects are designed to foster creativity and problem-solving while building a foundational understanding of computational thinking. Technology at the Lower School is a comprehensive and engaging curriculum, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital age.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Middle School technology curriculum at The Walker School offers a rich and diverse learning experience, equipping students with a robust foundation in digital literacy, computer science principles, and robotics.

Students explore the world of digital tools for Google Apps, emphasizing collaborative tools, blogs, and web page creation. They learn to harness the power of these tools for effective communication, project collaboration, and creative expression, preparing them for the interconnected digital landscape. Students explore the realms of visual storytelling and design using industry-standard tools such as Photoshop and Premiere.  

Students are introduced to computational thinking and its application across multiple disciplines. Students will create computational artifacts in their areas of interest. The big ideas for this course are creativity, global impact, programming, abstraction, data and information, algorithms, and the internet.

The Middle School offers students the opportunity for an immersive experience in the engineering process applied to the design, build, and control of robotic systems. Students engage and apply problem-solving skills and critical thinking to design and program robots, fostering a deep understanding of engineering principles.

UPPER SCHOOL

The Upper School Technology Department at The Walker School offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to foster the development of multifaceted skills.  Students in robotics and engineering design hone their problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills, gaining a deep understanding of the complexities of design and construction.

Students develop advanced skills in digital image manipulation and video editing, honing their creative expression and visual communication abilities, and exploring graphic design and multimedia production through courses in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. 3D software and modeling fosters proficiency in spatial visualization and design thinking.

Computer Science courses introduce programming in various languages to equip students with essential coding skills while examining issues in Cybersecurity, Data Analysis and Machine Learning.  The overarching emphasis on engineering design ensures students seamlessly integrate technological skills into comprehensive projects, fostering a well-rounded skill set essential for success in the dynamic landscape of technology and engineering.

AFTER SCHOOL ROBOTICS

Over 100 students participate in after-school robotics clubs and teams at Walker..

Robotics Junior (Grades 1-2)

 

FIRST Lego League (Grades 3-6)

There are two opportunities at Walker to participate in FIRST Lego League Robotics.


Introduction to FIRST Lego League Robotics - Non Competition
The Walker Robotics Club is open to students interested in
learning about coding and building robots using the EV3
Mindstorm platform. This is a non-competition club focused on
learning and honing building and coding skills.


FIRST Lego League Compeition Team
The Walker Robotics Club welcomes students that are interested
in & excited about science, technology, robotics, and engineering
to participate in the First LEGO League (FLL) Competition.


Students work in teams to research, problem-solve, design, and
build a robot that navigates the missions from the robot game.
Students also participate in a research project to solve a real-
world problem. They compete in a regional competition once a
year.
