From its first days as the St. James Kindergarten in St. James Episcopal Church to its current campus in Marietta, The Walker School has always been a leader in independent school education where creativity and individuality are encouraged and celebrated.

The Walker School began as St. James Kindergarten in 1957 with the decision to add a grade each year. Devoted Founder, Father Joseph T. Walker was one of the leading instigators of ecumenical dialogue in Cobb County, intent on creating a school environment where all students felt valued, loved and confident to pursue their dreams.

The St. James Day School was established in 1960, and by the 1963-64 school year, the school included kindergarten through fourth grade.

In January of that year, a devastating fire at the church forced the school to find a new home.

Father Walker, who remained involved with both the school and St. James Episcopal Church until he retired in 1968, quickly secured a new location at the Youth Education Building of First Baptist Church in Marietta. The school reopened in its new location just days after the fire, and a fifth grade was added in 1965.

In 1971, the school became independent from the church. Now renamed the Joseph T. Walker School, it moved to a new home on Waterman Street – the oldest school building in Cobb County at the time. The building, then owned by the Salvation Army, housed the school’s entire student body which ranged from three-year-old kindergarten through the sixth grade.

In 1977, the Joseph T. Walker School moved to its present location on the corner of Allgood Road and Cobb Parkway, occupying the previous home of Sprayberry High School. By 1981, Walker had grown into a well-respected PreK-12 school, and that May, it celebrated its first graduating class.
